Message If you want one with some balls, go with a 92-94SE model. they have a DOHC engine with 190hp, instead of the 160hp VG30E that's in all other 89-94 maxes..

the problem with the 92-94 SEs is that the 92 and some 93 models had a problem with the VTC solenoids (variable timed cams), which is a $1400 fix. the parts are ~$450 per cam, and you need two (DOHC).
the late-93 models and all 94s were supposedly built with different VTC modules that don't have this problem.

another issue is the auto tranny. the 89-91 SE & GXE models have a very weak tranny. most, if not all will need a rebuild before 150k miles (most 89-91 models are getting close to that mileage by now).
the 92-94 GXE models were built different from Nissan, and are much more reliable. I've only heard of a few that need rebuilt,
almost all 92-94 models are fine on the tranny. I've only seen a few that have been rebuilt, and one was from Kaleb @ courtesy nissan, who rebuilt his for good measure.. (spend $1000 now, or $2500 when it dies and you have to replace more parts)

Other minor issues:
speed sensors are notorious for failing. $10 part, just annoying.
Door lock timers.. $60 part.. I fixed mine by removing from the car and resoldering all conenctions. worked flawlessly for the last year since I did it.
Window Regulators on all models are prone to breakage. $60 each window. (I've fixed all 4 of mine without having to replace. it pays to have a Southern Engineering degree; ;-)
The BOSE system is absolute crap. most are dying/dead already. if you buy a max with bose, plan on replacing it soon. adaptors are $60-120 to connect the working bose equipment to any non-bose aftermarket stuff.
you're best off replacing the entire system at once.

the "base" stereo system ("active speaker" stamped on the rear deck).. is made by Clarion- sound quality isn't that great, but mine worked just fine when I removed it the day I bought my Max.

Other than that, they're extremely reliable. :)
Mine has 120k miles on it as of this weekend, and the only stuff I've had to replace aside from regular maintenance are engine mounts (from my driving)
alternator (from my 1100W system. :)
A/C belt tensioner bearing. (probably because I tightened belt too much when replacing alternator.)
window regulators (see above).

can't complain too much about that, eh?
